I used to love using Virtual Machine to run certain testing applications and those which might make my main system dirty of unnecessary running services. It did well, until the Virtual Machine burned my hard drive.
I really mean it, and it happened, unfortunately, in my office’s small scale server. Phew, thank God it was just a testing server. I think I wouldn’t save my job if it happened in a production server.
This virtual Machine was used to run FTK, for indexing and analyzing forensic evidence. The original virtual hard drive was only 40GB which wouldn’t suit my evidence size, therefore I meant to enlarge the size to 100GB of virtual hard drive. The problem started when I ran the module of Virtual Machine to do the job, and it never finished the job. Suddenly, out of thin air, the server stopped working. When I tested the hard drive, there was a noise, bad noise, came out of the hard drive, which was the sign of broken heads.
Sigh, I hope that this was only an accident and not a habit of the Virtual Machine.
