The Fields of Athenry, lagu ini jadi buah bibir pada pagelaran Euro 2012. Penyebabnya adalah suporter Irlandia.

Pertarungan hidup mati kesebelasan Republik Irlandia melawan tim berstatus juara Spanyol, yang pada akhirnya mengantar Irlandia tersingkir dari ajang 4 tahunan negara-negara Eropa.

The Fields of Athenry menjadi amat terkenal karena suporter Irlandia secara luar biasa menyanyikan lagu ini dengan penuh semangat walaupun tim mereka sudah pasti tidak bisa melanjutkan perjalanan mereka ke babak selanjutnya. Inilah yang membuat seluruh dunia memberikan penghargaan yang luar biasa. Umumnya suporter akan melontarkan sumpah serapah kepada tim yang kalah, namun kali ini terasa sangat berbeda, karena suporter luar biasa yang dimiliki Republik Irlandia.
